Your uniqueness can further the kindom

This takes place in Dequincy Louisiana this was another house that Samaritan’s Purse was scheduled to work on the home owners name is Douglas or as we called him Doug. When we arrived to this house he kept his distance from everyone, like he didn’t really want to talk to anyone he wore a hood to hide his face and spoke very quietly. My team was ready to start working but before we start there is a prayer with the home owner to start off the day. Doug wasn’t to keen on being apart of the prayer he still joined us nonetheless. There were three occurrences in which doug opened up more and more. The first he asked if someone could open up his car he had moved it before the storm struck and locked his keys inside; the person he asked immediately turned around and asked the team if anyone could open up a locked car. The squad mates that were on my team that morning all shouted my name. Doug said, “if your busy you don’t have to do it.” I said ,” Oh, don’t worry about it I’d be glad to open it up.” It didn’t take me long before I got the car open ,once I did Doug opened up a little almost like a turtle peeking from his shell. Later on in the day just before lunch, about eleven twenty I’m cutting up a tree that had fallen into what I had thought was overgrown grass. Once the tree was cleared Doug asks me ,”Do you like peppers”. I turned and answered him immediately saying ,” I love peppers!” He walked over to the overgrown grass patch bent over and picked a habenaro pepper and asked ,”Want some habenaros?” I was filled with excitement! I responded saying ,”I’d love some habenaros.”He told me to grab as many as I wanted. I picked so many that I filled up four medium sized sandwich bags! While I was picking Doug and I had a conversation about peppers and our love for them. That lowered Doug’s guard that he originally had when we first arrived. A couple hours later were starting to wrap things up it’s now three twenty I’m trimming a tree that had been partly ripped out of the ground, while I’m doing this Doug talks to me about two trees over by the garden that were in the same position as the one i wasw working on. He said his mother had planted. Doug had only talked to me about three things that day his car peppers and the trees his mother planted I figured that those trees mean a lot to Doug. My team leader was packing up the tools I walked over to him and asked him to pass me the pole saw because there’s more work to be done. He looked at me with a curious smile and said,” Ok here ya go.” I trimmed the two trees and stood them back up ,Doug was elated and very thankful. After that we packed up and once Samaritan’s purse finishes a job they present the homeowner with a Bible and close with prayer.Doug was asked if he’d like to dedicate his life to the Lord and he refused. After that everyone started to head out and while I was walking I got to have a one on one with Doug and I got to pray for him in a more intimate way. A week later my squad leader gets a phonecall from Samaritan’s purse saying Doug has given his life to the Lord. I never would have thought that my love for peppers could further the kingdom of God. God has made you unique. There are certain people that only you can bring the gospel to that others can’t because of the way you were made so embrace your difference because that’s who you were made to be

  1. Nick, I’m in tears. You showed Doug a little extra attention, cared about what he cares about, and those little acts of obedience planted seeds in his heart. Small kindnesses. I know you were thrilled to hear he is now a brother in Christ! I pray for his discipleship; for God to bring others to him who can help continue to point him to Jesus, to help him grow in his faith and love for his Savior. Thanks for the reminder that a the small things can be really big things in God’s hands.
